My new favorite coffee brewing method is also the worst for road-trips

Image
A road-trip is a great way to figure out what you want to do when you get home. It's been almost 7 weeks on the road camping out of my Jeep. Since the Jeep TJ is such a small vehicle to fit all the gear two people need for 8 weeks on the road, a lot of thought went into what we need to bring - and what we don't.  One of the things I had to have was a coffee brewing method. I had been making coffee with a pour-over set for many months. My set included the basics for making a perfect cup of coffee: a chemex, paper filters, a kettle, a food scale, and a grinder. A week or so before leaving, I purchased a Phin filter set from Nguyen Coffee Supply. It included everything you need to brew coffee the Vietnamese way - including Vietnamese coffee.  It's an extremely simple method of brewing a great cup of coffee, and it doesn't even require precise measurements like a pour-over set does. It doesn't require paper filters, either, which means less waste.  Vietnamese coffee is...

A How-To Guide to Car Camping the Right Way

Image
Principles, packing lists, proven systems that makes it easier and.. how to poop? After two weeks on the road camping out of my Jeep TJ with my girlfriend, there’s one thing I can say for certain: I’m glad I’m not new to this whole camping thing. In Big Bend National Park, Texas, 2025 I’ve been camping at least 100 times before . Mostly just for fun, however I was a member on a trail crew where camping was part of my job. During my time on the trail crew I learned the systems of doing things which removes some of the pain and discomfort that can be associated with camping. I also learned a lot through trial and error while camping by myself. If you’re new to camping, I highly suggest you take some of this advice before going on your next camping trip. Making mistakes is part of the experience - and makes for good stories - but starting out on the right foot is worth it. I want to be clear that this is for people who want to get more into car camping on public lands . I highly value o...

This blog post is for people who might be in a similar situation as myself. Feeling uncertain and not exactly where your high-school or even college self thought you'd be at this point in your life. To help myself - and anyone in a similar boat - I put together a short list of things you and I can do to help feel positively about the future. Make a to-do list. I didn't start writing down the things I needed to get done until my junior year of college. Before that I would procrastinate and forget about assignments. Since starting writing down things I need to do: I get more done, I don't forget about important tasks, and I feel more accomplished overall.  My favorite app on my phone has become Todoist . It's a simple app for making a to-do list. You can schedule tasks ahead of time or make a list right when you wake up, and then simply check it off and it disappears from your list. It even keeps track of how many tasks you complete. I like seeing exactly what I need to d...

The Coolest Jeep Culture In History - Yipao

Image
Jeeps and Coffee - two of my favorite things.  This blog post started as dialogue for a YouTube video which I never ended up making. Instead of letting it just sit in my Google docs collection, I figured it's worth sharing on my blog. Besides, I've made a new YouTube channel for the cars, coffee, and camping content which I'll explain sometime soon. Probably. I'll dive into how Jeep and coffee intersects on an historical level, and go into the history of the coolest Jeep culture I’ve ever heard of. I hope you learn something new. The Willys MB was commissioned by the US Army between 1940 and 1945 as a light recognition vehicle. Developed by MB (aka Willys Overland), it was a simple, durable, capable light truck designed to be able to carry soldiers and equipment over any terrain. Amazingly, this early "Jeep" arrived as a DIY kit dropped from an aircraft in a crate... and could be assembled in just 4 minutes. It’s 2453 pounds, 132 inches long, 62 inches wide, ...

MUD/WTR: Does it live up to the marketing hype?

Image
Sorry Shane, I'm not the market you're after. A little over a week ago, curiosity got the best of me and I pulled the trigger on a 30 serving container of Rise Cacao MUD/WTR. If you haven't heard of MUD/WTR, founder Shane Heath created the recipe as a coffee alternative. It uses mushrooms like Lion's mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, and Reishi to avoid the coffee crash and provide all-day energy, mental clarity, and immune support. As a daily coffee drinker, I thought maybe it's meant for me. Marketing buzzwords like mental clarity caught my attention, and the powers that mushrooms can offer are no joke. Further, the MUD/WTR brand donates to psychedelic research for mental health, and offers a pretty humorous tone in their writing. All things I can appreciate. However, after about 10 days of drinking MUD/WTR, the only real effect it has on me is this: I really miss my coffee.  And that's not just the coffee relapse talking. I'm not the person who drinks coffee all d...

My (not so) Far-Fetched Ideas for My Jeep Wrangler TJ pt. 1

Image
Ever since I bought my Jeep almost four years ago, I've been daydreaming about what I want it to look like, where I want it to take me, and what I want to create with it. Unfortunately for me, the image in my head changes with the days of the week. It's a morphing idea that constantly takes on new mods and purpose. However, there are a few ideas that I can't seem to let go of. Below, I'll share one of the possibilities of what I could do with my Jeep in the months to come. But first, let's talk about my starting point. My 2005 Jeep Wrangler TJ today. It's a mostly stock 2005 Jeep Wrangler in Patriot Blue Pearl with just over 125,000 miles on the clock (it had 89,000 when I bought it). I've done a few mods to it including an exhaust and an intake system , but most of the stuff I've done is making it look like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I switched the wheels it came with for silver MOAB wheels, gave it bigger tires, a new soft top , switched ...

This Is Why Vinyl Is Making A Comeback

Image
"The younger generation will never understand" Or will they? Along with many other young adults who ride the line between Millennial and Gen-Z, I have recently found a fascination with vinyl records. Growing up in a time when you can stream any song imaginable in the snap of a finger has made music feel like less of the gift it once was. However, the decline in popularity of physical music makes me wonder how my kids will experience music. Late 90's/early 00's babies like me are lucky enough to be only one generation removed from the days when vinyl was a main source of entertainment. That means we grew up hearing about it from our parents and seeing it in our grandparents' basement. Although it became obsolete before we were born, it wasn't entirely foreign to us. In my opinion, that is part of the reason why it's starting to increase in popularity. We know that music wasn't always as easily accessible as it is now. We're bored of pulling out our...
