This blog post is for people who might be in a similar situation as myself. Feeling uncertain and not exactly where your high-school or even college self thought you'd be at this point in your life.
To help myself - and anyone in a similar boat - I put together a short list of things you and I can do to help feel positively about the future.
- Make a to-do list.
- I didn't start writing down the things I needed to get done until my junior year of college. Before that I would procrastinate and forget about assignments. Since starting writing down things I need to do: I get more done, I don't forget about important tasks, and I feel more accomplished overall.
- My favorite app on my phone has become Todoist. It's a simple app for making a to-do list. You can schedule tasks ahead of time or make a list right when you wake up, and then simply check it off and it disappears from your list. It even keeps track of how many tasks you complete. I like seeing exactly what I need to do and being able to check it off my list and stop thinking about it.
- Focus on something you're passionate about.
- What do you care about? What makes you happy? What would you not mind doing for hours at a time? Master a skill you have. Share your hobbies with others on social media. It's easier than ever to share ideas. Teach people how to do what you do. Make videos about it. Make something that will help someone in their day-to-day life. Even if you don't think so, there are thousands of other people who share the same interests as you and would love to see it.
- Recently I've been getting suggested posts about rare, collectible, or new Hot Wheels cars in store. I was a Hot Wheels kid so seeing people my age and older bring their childhood passion back to life is cool to see. It also goes to show that putting something you care about out into the world can reach the right audience. You don't know until you try.
- Start a project
- This could be about something you're passionate about as stated above. In my case, Sean's Coffeehouse started as this blog about 3 years ago. I was bored and wanted a project to work on while at school. I like writing and I like the idea of a cozy virtual coffeehouse. Plus, making a Blogger page is free and it's a way for me to share my ideas without feeling as much pressure as I do making YouTube videos.
- It doesn't have to be a project that you share with others. It can be something that you keep to yourself - which can be just as rewarding.
- Take advantage of your situation
- In my case, I have a few months off until my next season with the Park Service. It's not a great feeling and doesn't make settling down easy. There are a lot of unknowns - I don't even know which state I'll be living in next. But I'm going to use the opportunity to travel to places I've never been. I'm going to create movies about my travels and what it's like living out of my Jeep for several weeks. I'll help people get the most out of their trips to National and State Parks. I'm going to take advantage of my situation. Take advantage of yours!
- Self-care
- Self care is important. It's a confusing time, so take a moment every day to check in with yourself. Wake up early, exercise, take time to read a book. These are all things that end up benefiting you subconsciously. You'll have more energy and you'll be happier overall. You'll be more willing to take on difficult situations. You'll thank yourself.
- A book I recently finished is Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization by Neil deGrasse Tyson. It's an interesting book which goes into societal issues from the perspective of an extraterrestrial being. Basically, if an alien were to come to Earth, it wouldn't be able to tell a difference between any two humans; we're all just fleshy bodies with two arms and two legs, yet we can't help but fight and argue about our differences.
- I recently got a book on coffee roasting which goes into the anatomy of the coffee bean, different methods of harvesting and roasting, and how/why different regions of the world produce beans with different flavor profiles. Look for a book about something you're interested in.
- Don't get comfortable
- If you're living with your parents or a family member, the worst thing you can do is make it too comfortable. Don't encourage complacency in yourself. You'll get lazy and you'll revert to a state of mind that you had in your younger years. Make yourself want to leave. It'll push you to take action.
- Don't bother decorating your room. Don't buy things you don't need. Get into the mindset that you're only here for the time being.
- Write out your goals
- Writing out your goals in the format of "I will have (specific goal) by (specific date)" is an excellent way to make it real. It'll force you to take action. Seeing it on paper will fire you up to take steps towards it. Buy a 2025 planner. Actually write in it. They're cheap - and if you start planning out small steps to complete your goals, you're 1,000% more likely to achieve them.
- Here's one of mine: I will have 2,000 subscribers on the Sean's Coffeehouse YouTube channel by December 9th, 2025.
- Take a deep breath. It'll be ok.
- This one's important. Take a deep breath. Even if it doesn't seem like it at the moment, you'll be ok. Especially if you're the type of person to seek out advice such as this blog post, success is in your future. Your 20's are full of figuring things out and growing into your true self. Don't get caught up with comparing your life to the lives of the people you see on social media, or even the lives of your friends. We're all on different paths with different goals in mind. Enjoy it while you can! Times like these are what make for good stories. Your grandkids will thank you for that.
- Drink some coffee.
- Obviously.
Hope this helps.
-Sean
